Glycation and the aging process
Many of the ageing signs we see on our skin are caused through the loss of good quality collagen fibres. One of the most damaging things that can occur to the fibres is the process of ‘glycation’, which is basically when sugar (glucose) combines with the proteins on our collagen fibres making them ‘sticky’. This essentially makes our collagen fibres stick to each other rather than flowing smoothly over one another.
Glycation can be caused by two things: when there is too much sugar circulating in our blood; or when we don’t respond to insulin, the hormone that would normally ensure the sugar is carried from the blood into the cells to produce energy. Glycation results in tough, wrinkled connective tissue, which is most visible on the skin as wrinkles but can also occur all through the body.
Here’s how to reduce glycation in your skin to keep it looking smooth and radiant:
• Eat less white, refined grains.
• Watch your intake of stimulants like caffeine and alcohol that cause peaks in your blood sugar levels.
• Consume good fats like Bestow Beauty Oil (which is full of skin-enhancing Omega 3’s).
• Eat quality proteins like eggs, fish, chicken and tofu.
• Don’t miss meals, but eat little and often.
• Exercise, as muscle is more receptive to insulin than fat.
• Increase your antioxidant intake by eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. Herbal teas are another great source of antioxidants.
NOTE: Vinegar helps stabilize blood sugar levels, so why not enjoy a French dressing made from apple cider vinegar and Bestow Beauty Oil with meals?
