Zinc – your skin’s secret weapon

November 4, 2010

One of the most important minerals for skin health and anti-ageing is zinc, but unfortunately it is the one mineral most people are deficient in.  Many medications including the contraceptive pill deplete our levels of zinc, and on top of that, our soils are Zinc-deficient and so is processed food.

Zinc helps us produce healthy collagen, aids skin healing, helps to prevent scaring and makes the skin strong and resilient.

To test for zinc you can do a simple ‘taste test’ at most pharmacies or health food shops.  This test is usually free, so go and get a test today and see if you need a supplement to help build up your zinc levels.  Be aware that, even with supplementation, it can take many months to correct the levels of zinc in your body.

Healthy foods rich in zinc are:  Oysters, chicken, eggs, salmon, tuna, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, pecans, almonds, muesli, porridge, whole grains, wheat germ, Brewer’s yeast
